Soundtrack:
"Oh we wish that we were geese, night and morn, night and morn,
Oh we wish that we were geese, night and morn, night and morn,
Oh we wish that we were geese, and could live our lives in peace,
Till the hour of our release, eating corn, eating corn, eating corn."

Question: Will this food crisis be remembered like the notorious Irish Potato Famine, in which the make-up of Ireland was forever altered? Or, will it have an even greater impact, but be remembered as just another time of suffering during which rich countries' citizens turned a deaf ear to tragedy?
We have all we need. Why bother? Famine, pestilence, death ... it happens every year. And, undoubtedly, it will continue to be a perennial hot button for certain people, so let them handle it. I hear all the time that compassion hasn't gotten us anywhere. Well, the number of people in need grows each year, at about the rate that the number of people unwilling to help grows as well. More people that need help necessitates more people who want to help. I see a positive trend currently, but it's not enough. Not enough people are converting. Why? Innumerable reasons, but none with whom I can empathize. Other than fatalists, but even they have more courage than the lazy, the complacent, and the self-centered.
Comes down to being a conscious and active global citizen, I guess. What are you doing to help the world? What are you doing to make sure this time does not escape the history books? It shouldn't fade away as the status quo. It shouldn't BE the status quo. This time is exceptional, whether one realizes it or not. And exceptional times call for exceptional people. I ask you, be exceptional.
